World Jeans market now saturated in developed world, but sales to rise 5% globally by 2010
Bromsgrove, UK April 4, 2004--By 2010, there will be 2024 million pairs of jeans sold per year, according to new research from just-style.com, representing a rise of 4.8% on 2003's figure. Despite the forecast rise in volume, it is predicted that the value of worldwide jean sales will remain unchanged at around US$54bn. Furthermore, almost all of the volume growth in the market will be accounted for by the developing world.
These findings are unveiled in the first ever global analysis and forecast to be carried out on the jeanswear market, revealed in a new report from just-style.com.
The report goes on to show that the jeanswear market in the developed world is saturated, with even baby boomers now aged 55-60 wearing jeans, proving the chance of selling to the "grey" market has already gone. Future growth potential is in the developing world, which has a rising population and a large base of young people looking to follow the American dream that jeans epitomise.
Traditional brands are being attacked on every front: from low priced retailers to high priced 'must-have' brands, Levi's, Wrangler and Lee are having their market shares eroded at every turn... Retailers' own-label jeans have been the primary cause of the problems faced by the "Big 3", with Gap, Wal-Mart, Next and others taking the lead in their respective markets. In addition, every season brings its own "must-have" label that the main brands have to compete with.
"The denim and jeans market has had a bumpy ride over the past couple of years but, as our report shows, the leading companies in this field are fighting back with new styles, innovative fabrics and new niches like the top-end fashion lines," says Leonie Barrie, Editor of just-style.com. "For the first time our report takes a truly international look at the denim and jeanswear sector across the whole of its supply chain and offers fabric suppliers, manufacturers and retailers an insight into the products and markets likely to offer most potential in the future."
On a lighter note, the report compares American and European jeans ownership, and estimates that the average American owns 7 pairs of jeans, and buys 2 per year, and in Western Europe the average person owns 4 pairs and buys 1 per year.
